Lima to Machu Picchu in 2026 — Full Travel Plan
Almost every international visitor to Machu Picchu enters Peru through Lima's Jorge Chávez airport. Lima itself is at sea level on the Pacific coast, while Machu Picchu sits 1,000 km away in the Andes. There is no direct way to get there — you fly to Cusco first.
The full route, end-to-end
- Lima → Cusco (LIM → CUZ) — ~1h30 flight. Multiple daily departures on LATAM, Sky, Avianca, JetSMART.
- Cusco acclimatization — 2-3 days minimum at 3,400 m altitude.
- Cusco → Ollantaytambo — 1h30-2h by ground transport.
- Ollantaytambo → Aguas Calientes — 1h30-1h45 by train.
- Aguas Calientes → citadel — 25-30 min bus or 1.5-2h walk.
Total trip time and minimum nights
- Realistic minimum: 4 nights (2 Cusco/Sacred Valley + 1 Aguas Calientes + 1 Cusco return).
- Comfortable trip: 6-7 nights including 1-2 days exploring Cusco and Sacred Valley.
- If combining with other Peru destinations (Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, Amazon): 10-14 nights total.
Lima → Cusco flight
- Airlines: LATAM, Sky Airline, JetSMART, Avianca.
- Round-trip price: $80-300 USD depending on season and how far in advance you book. Cheapest in November-March; highest in July-August.
- Best time to fly: Morning. Cusco's airport (CUZ, alt 3,400 m) is surrounded by mountains and afternoon weather often forces cancellations or diversions to Lima or Arequipa.
- Booking advice: Book 2-3 months ahead for high season. Same-day connections from international flights work but are tight — consider an overnight in Lima if your international flight arrives late.
Should you stay a night in Lima?
If your international flight lands in Lima before noon, you can connect to a Cusco flight the same day. If it arrives evening or night, an overnight in Miraflores or Barranco is wise. Lima itself is worth 1-2 days for the food alone (it's frequently ranked among the world's top food cities).
Alternative: train via the southern route
PeruRail's Belmond Andean Explorer luxury sleeper train connects Cusco with Lake Titicaca (Puno) and Arequipa, but does NOT connect Cusco to Lima directly. To travel between Lima and Cusco overland, you'd take a long-distance bus (Cruz del Sur, Oltursa) — around 21-22 hours via Nasca and Abancay. Most travelers find this not worth the time savings vs flying.
What to do during Cusco acclimatization
- Walk the historic center: Plaza de Armas, Cathedral, Qorikancha, San Blas.
- San Pedro Market — local food, produce, juices.
- Sacsayhuamán Inca fortress (high altitude — go on day 2-3).
- The Sacred Valley: Pisac (market and ruins), Ollantaytambo (fortress town), Maras (salt mines), Moray (circular terraces). Sacred Valley is at lower altitude than Cusco — many travelers prefer to acclimatize there.
- Drink coca tea, walk slowly, hydrate, avoid alcohol on the first day.
