Circuit 1 is called Panoramic because it covers only the upper terraces of the citadel. It includes the iconic Guardian's House viewpoint — the spot where every classic Machu Picchu photo was taken — but it does not let you walk among the temples below. For that, you need Circuit 2.

Choose Circuit 1 if your priority is a difficult mountain hike (Route 1-A), or if you've already visited the temples on a previous trip and want a different angle.

The 4 routes within Circuit 1

Route 1-A — Machu Picchu Mountain

  • What you do: Walk up to the classic viewpoint, then continue up to the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain (3,082 m / 10,111 ft).
  • Duration: Up to 7 hours total (3-3.5h up, 1h on top, 2-2.5h down).
  • Difficulty: Hard. Steep stone stairs, exposure, no shade.
  • Slots: Limited daily capacity, sells out 1-2 months ahead in high season.
  • Price band: Higher than standard Circuit 1 (mountain add-on fee).
  • Best for: Hikers in good shape who want the broadest panorama in the entire sanctuary. The summit looks down on Wayna Picchu — a perspective most visitors never see.

Route 1-B — Upper Terrace

  • What you do: Walk to the Guardian's House viewpoint via the agricultural terraces. Take the postcard photo. Tour the upper agricultural sector. Exit.
  • Duration: 2.5 hours maximum.
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate (some stairs).
  • Availability: Year-round, BUT closed October 16 to December 29 each year for maintenance.
  • Best for: Travelers who want the iconic photo and a brief panoramic visit, perhaps as a second day after Circuit 2.

Route 1-C — Sun Gate (Inti Punku)

  • What you do: Includes Route 1-B plus a 2-hour round-trip walk along the original Inca highway to Inti Punku (2,745 m), the ceremonial entrance Inca pilgrims used.
  • Duration: ~2 hours total.
  • Difficulty: Moderate (gradual incline, dirt path).
  • Availability: High season only — June 1 to October 15.
  • Best for: Travelers who can't book the Inca Trail but want the Sun Gate experience.

Route 1-D — Inca Bridge

  • What you do: Includes the classic viewpoint plus a flat walk to the dramatic Inca Bridge built into the cliff face on the eastern flank.
  • Duration: ~2 hours total.
  • Difficulty: Easy (flat path), but exposed cliff-edge sections.
  • Availability: High season only. 18+ only.
  • Best for: Travelers interested in lesser-known Inca engineering. The bridge itself is no longer crossable — you view it from a barrier.

What you'll see on the postcard viewpoint

From the Guardian's House terrace, the entire citadel spreads below. You'll see the Temple of the Sun (semicircular), the Sacred Plaza, the Three Windows complex, the Intihuatana ritual stone perched on its platform, the residential sectors descending toward the Urubamba river, and Wayna Picchu rising behind.

The view is more dramatic in the morning before clouds form. Mid-morning mist (typical year-round, daily in November-March) can reduce visibility to nothing within minutes. Plan accordingly.

If clouds roll in Mist usually lifts within 30-60 minutes. Wait at the viewpoint rather than rushing on. Many people leave the moment they arrive in fog and miss the reveal entirely.

What Circuit 1 does NOT include

  • Walking among the temples (Sun Temple, Three Windows, Intihuatana)
  • The lower residential sectors
  • The water fountains and ceremonial sources
  • Wayna Picchu mountain access

If those matter to you, book Circuit 2 (or Circuit 3 for Wayna Picchu).

Logistics

  • Entry windows: 06:00 to 14:00 (last slot 14:00 in high season).
  • Price: ~152 PEN for foreign adults, standard. Route 1-A carries an additional mountain fee (~50 PEN extra).
